Achieving goals is relative, because everyone has a different goal in life. I truly believe we all need some type of goal to keep us LIVING. When you give up on goals you just sort of give up on LIFE...or shall I say, you give up on what you really want out of life. Thank God that Philippians 4:13 assures us we have the victory and the resources to achieve what is in our hearts. Recall Paul’s bold statement, “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.”
As a success coach, project manager, and singing teacher I witness people climb their personal mountains almost daily. The single most common trait these folks have is belief (faith). Achievers are crazy enough to believe they can do ANYTHING. But unbelieving people tend to avoid goals so they can sidestep the painful sting of failure. Honestly, I empathize with those who wish to skip failure, because I don't particularly enjoy disappointment myself. However, I've lived long enough to know there are times when we miss the mark. And I’ve also learned that we have to keep striving. Besides, I don’t recommend stopping in the middle of the race, because for sure you can’t win!
So I am encouraging you to take this first step toward your goals and away from settling:
Write out what you want to achieve. Keep your dreams to yourself for awhile. Sit with them and make sure they are your dreams and not someone else's (e.g., parents, teachers, mates). [What]
Write out when you'd like to see yourself achieve the goal. Be reasonable, but don't be too easy on yourself. Do the research to see how long it takes to achieve such a goal. Try to avoid random, unrealistic, or strictly imposed deadlines. [When]
Write out the type of resources it might take to achieve such a goal. Resources should include the financial (How much do you need and where might you get it?), human (Who should be on your team?), and physical (Where do you need to be to achieve the goal? Are you in the right place now or will you be later?) [Where]
Lastly, another common trait achievers share is they are planners. Without a roadmap you will end up some place, but it might not be where you want to be! Don’t risk your hard efforts on chance.
